What's A Puffback?

Those are NOT cobwebs you see

The ceiling joists are an indicator of soot

Now THAT'S a dirty tub!

Nope. That's not carpeting on the floor.

What Is A Puff-Back?

Have you ever had a puff-back? Most people (luckily) never have, let alone even heard of one. A puff-back is caused by an oil burner that has malfunctioned. In mildly technical terms, it's a kind of explosion inside the combustion chamber caused by the fast ignition of built-up gas or oil vapors. The results can be very nasty indeed. The fumes can often back up into the heating ducts which are more than likely in just about every room of the house. The furnace will first need to be repaired by a qualified oil-burner technician before any cleanup can be done or else the puff-ing will continue every time the furnace kicks on. The residue that comes with a puff-back isn't so much dust as it is part petroleum (oil-based) particles. This is one of the reasons that the soot "sticks" to absolutely everything in the house.

We treat puff-backs the same way that we do fire and smoke restoration. In general, cleaning should begin within 48 hours of the incident.
